Tomeka Reid, aktuelle improviser in residence des moers festivals, stammt aus Washington D.C., ging aber zum Studium nach Chicago und traf dort auf eine der schillerndsten und lebendigsten Musikszenen der Welt. Schon bald arbeitete sie mit etwa Braxtons ZIM Sextett, oder dem legendären Art Ensemble of Chicago. Im Rahmen dessen 50-jährigen Jubiläums kamen Cook, Kwon und Reid erstmals als Streicher:innen-Gruppe zusammen und nun bringt Reid ihr New Yorker Trio mit zum visual sound outdoor festival: drei außergewöhnliche Streich-Künstler:innen, zwischen instant composing und eindringlicher Performance, mit einem besonderen Gefühl für Groove und einer spezifischen Farbe in Harmonik und Melodik.

Tomeka Reid: Schon ihr Instrument, das Cello, zeigt, dass sie nicht nur im Jazz, sondern auch in der zeitgenössischen komponierten Musik zu Hause ist. Als Grenzgängerin zwischen den Welten erschafft sie eine sehr vielfältige Musik. Hier identifiziert sie sich stark mit vielen Künstler*innen ihrer Wahlheimat: bei aller wilden Experimentierfreude bleiben stets die Wurzeln und die Tradition insbesondere der afroamerikanischen Kunst im Blick. Oder, wie es der Wahlspruch des Art Ensembles prägnant ausdrückt: Great Black Music from the ancient to the future! Reid ist Weltbürgerin, die fünf Sprachen spricht und bereits überall auf dem Erdball konzertiert und unterrichtet hat. So arbeitet sie aktuell an Projekten mit äthiopischen Künstler*innen. 2019 wurde zur Darius Milhaud Gastprofessorin am renommierten Mills College in Oakland, Kalifornien berufen.
eddy kwon (b. 1989) is a violinist/violist and interdisciplinary artist based in New York City. As a composer-performer and improviser, she is inspired by Korean folk timbres & inflections, textures & movement from natural environments, and American experimentalism as shaped by the AACM. She collaborates with artists of diverse disciplines, including The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Du Yun, Senga Nengudi, Holland Andrews, and Degenerate Art Ensemble. She has performed in improvisational ensembles with Roscoe Mitchell, Mary Halvorson, Susan Alcorn, Carla Kihlstedt, Joe Morris, Fay Victor, Michael Formanek, and more. eddy is a United States Artists Fellow, Johnson Fellow at Americans for the Arts, Van Lier Fellow at Roulette Intermedium, and Andrew W. Mellon Artist-in-Residence at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. She has performed throughout the Americas and Europe, including the Kennedy Center, Big Ears Festival, Kaufman Center, Roulette Intermedium, SESC Pompeia, SESC Santos, Barbican Centre, Jazzfest Berlin, Festival Sons d’hivers, Festival Banlieues Bleues, and more. Recent commissions include Bang On A Can, Roulette Intermedium, Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati, National Performance Network, and Colorado College Creativity & Innovation. Recently, eddy was featured as one of the Washington Post’s “22 for ‘22: Composers and performers to watch this year.”

Jean Cook is a Korean-American composer, violinist, and sound artist based in New York City, best known for her work as violinist with Anthony Braxton and the UK band Pulp. She has worked closely for many years with Jon Langford, Ida, His Name is Alive, and Tara Jane O’Neil. Other collaborations include with Art Ensemble of Chicago, William Parker, Taylor Ho Bynum, Michael Hurley, Beauty Pill, and Helado Negro.
